About CheckGen | Cosmetic Claims Substantiation

Why CheckGen exists.

We started CheckGen because we saw gaps in how skincare is tested.

1
The real effects sit beneath the surface

Most testing looks at the surface of the skin. Few studies measure what a formulation is actually doing in the layers underneath, which is where many actives do their work.

2
A dish is not skin

In vitro tests commonly rely on a single cell type. This does not reflect the layered structure of skin, or how a formulation travels through the skin barrier, so results from a dish can differ from what happens in a person.

3
A formula is more than its ingredients

Data on an individual ingredient does not always predict how the finished formulation performs, once the vehicle, penetration and interactions between ingredients come into play. Testing the final formula shows what it actually does.

4
Every person responds differently

Group averages can hide who responds strongly, who responds mildly and who does not respond at all. Measuring at the individual level shows who a product works for, and why.

5
Everyone is making the same claims

Across the market, brands make very similar claims, which makes it hard for a formulation to stand apart. Evidence of what a formulation actually changes in the skin gives a brand something distinctive to stand behind.

How we approach it.

Real participants

Studies run in real people, with participants chosen to suit the formulation being tested.

Nothing assumed in advance

Thousands of proteins measured with no pre-set list of biomarkers, so the data shows what is actually changing.

Evidence you can use

A clear report of the biological functions your formulation altered, ready for conferences, partner meetings and staff education.
